Getting ready for the DNC Convention

Philadelphia is ready to welcome visitors for the DNC.

From July 25-28, 2016, all eyes will be on Philadelphia as the city hosts the Democratic National Convention. Held at the Wells Fargo Center in South Philadelphia, the convention is one of the marquee events of the 2016 presidential race.

The convention not only has major implications for the political world, but is also expected to have a significant economic impact on the region.

We remind you that Philadelphia is no stranger to political conventions. The Republican Party held its first Republican National Convention in Philadelphia in 1856. They returned in 1872, 1900, 1940, 1948 and most recently in 2000. Democrats have held their Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia twice — in 1936 and in 1948.

So our city knows its way around to a major event, how else would you explain that everyone started to get ready 6 months ago?

You must know that this historic event will have everything: from protests to parties and a political fest and yes, everybody is coming not only the democrats. That is why there more than 11,000 hotel rooms in Center City, and about 8,000 within a 15-minute walk of the Pennsylvania Convention Center and City Hall are waiting for its guests anxiously.

From July 22 to 27, the Democratic National Convention's host committee will present Political Fest, a multi-location exhibition celebrating American history, government and the road to the White House. Housed at seven locations throughout Philadelphia, Political Fest is a non-partisan display that combines multimedia and interactive displays, historical objects and special events to entertain and engage both residents and convention attendees.

The full list of Political Fest locations includes:

  • the National Constitution Center
  • the Pennsylvania Convention Center
  • National Liberty Museum
  • Philadelphia History Museum
  • The Philadelphia Library Company
  • Historical Society of Pennsylvania, and
  • the Heritage Center at the Union League.

To welcome delegates, elected officials and citizens from around the nation to Philadelphia for the DNC, the Philadelphia 2016 Host Committee for the Democratic National Convention will unveil Donkeys Around Town, a citywide public installation of 57 fiberglass donkeys representing the 50 states, five United States territories, Washington D.C. and Democrats Abroad.

In partnership with Philadelphia’s Mural Arts Program and Art Jawn, the host committee sourced more than two dozen local Philly artists to paint the 250-pound fiberglass mules. Each of the 57 donkeys will include the name of the state it reps and iconic imagery from that state or territory.

The donkeys will be on view at publicly accessible locations all around Philadelphia like the Independence Visitor Center, One Liberty Observation Deck and the Philadelphia Museum of Art through Labor Day, September 5, 2016.
