The Business Traveler’s Short Guide to Philadelphia

Philadelphia has been a hub of business on the East Coast since the time of the Revolutionary War. If your job takes you on the road frequently, chances are you may end up booking a flight to this Pennsylvania city.

When traveling to Philly for business, you can experience the historical location without sacrificing any of your favorite modern conveniences. Use this guide to plan the details of your trip to maximize both comfort and productivity.

Where to Stay

Road warriors don’t need to worry about finding appropriate accommodations, as Philadelphia has plenty to offer in that department. Try the Sofitel Philadelphia Hotel, which Trip Advisor ranked as the top business hotel in the city. The Sofitel blends American style with French luxury and features a chic onsite restaurant and bar. The spacious rooms are equipped with WiFi, fully-stocked mini bars and French bath products.

If you’re going to spend any time at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, consider staying at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown. The hotel is centrally located, provides guests with free WiFi and connects directly to the convention center via a convenient skywalk.  During your stay you can also enjoy the Marriott’s fitness center and pool to get in some exercise while on the road.

Is convenience your top priority? There are a number of hotels located near the airport, including a Hampton Inn, Double Tree and Sheraton that are perfect for quick trips or early morning flights back home. Just make sure that you’ll be able to get WiFi in your room if you’re planning on working before bed.

What to Do

If you’re a history buff and have some downtime while on business in Philadelphia, make sure to go see the Liberty Bell and tour Independence Hall. The bell, a symbol of freedom in the U.S., is over 250 years old and is definitely worth a visit.

If history isn’t your thing, visit the beautiful Philadelphia Museum of Art after you finish your work for the day. The main building is open until 8:45 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays. For sports fans, check to see if the Phillies – Philadelphia’s major-league baseball team – are playing a night game at Citizens Bank Park.

Where to eat

For the road warrior who wants to take a client out to dinner, Laurel is sure to impress. Philly Magazine ranked the restaurant as the best in the city. “Top Chef” winner Nick Elmi creates an intimate French-American dining experience with his seven-course Chef’s Tasting menu. If the $85 per person price tag is a little high for your taste, try Fork Restaurant, a contemporary American restaurant that features a number of entrees under $40. Chef and owner Eli Kulp was named Best New Chef in 2014 by Food and Wine Magazine.

Since you’re in Philadelphia, no trip is complete without trying a Philly cheesesteak sandwich before you leave the city. The cheese- and meat-filled favorite will make a great lunch between meetings or a great late-night snack before you head back to your hotel for the night.

After your meetings, spend the evening enjoying one of Philadelphia's fine restaurants. After your meetings, spend the evening enjoying one of Philadelphia’s fine restaurants.
